Week beginning Monday 9th of February, 2009

"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." Colossians 2:6-7 (NIV)

Why memorise scripture?

Good question - here are a couple of resources that give some answers and help with both reading the Bible and memorising scripture:

How do I memorise scripture?

Praying for God's help is always a good place to start, that He would enable you to store His word in your heart.

Different people have different ways of learning things, below is one suggested way of how to memorise scripture (applicable to both a single verse or a group of verses).

Each element should be performed out loud
  1. Read the whole verse slowly 3 times
  2. Read the first phrase 3 times
  3. Recite the first phrase 3 times
  4. Read the first and second phrases together 3 times
  5. Recite the first and second phrases together 3 times
  6. Read the whole verse 3 times
  7. Recite the whole verse 3 times
  8. Every day for the the next week, recite the verse a couple of times
The above method can also be used for longer passages, simply break the passage into as many phrases as makes sense and repeat the building steps (2 - 5) as many times as required.
